Great Britain marched comfortably into the semi-finals of the IIHF In-Line World Championships after a controlled performance saw them beat New Zealand here in Bratislava, Slovakia.

GB led 2-0 at the half way point after goals from Joe Wightman and John Dolan in the first and second periods. Wightman’s second in the third period was followed by a fourth period deluge as Chris Colegate, Mark Corfield and Dolan (twice) gave GB a significant win against last year’s Division One Silver medallists.

Special mention however goes to James Tanner in the British net, who was exceptional in posting his first ever shutout at this level. Corfield’s goal was also his first for GB.

GB now go on to play last year’s Division One gold medallists Brazil tomorrow, where a win would set up a potentially mouth watering final against either Canada or Australia on Saturday.

“We’re delighted for the boys tonight, especially (James) Tanner,” said GB assistant coach Jon Maw, “We worked hard in this game and this was the start of a whole new tournament. New Zealand didn’t win the silver last year for nothing, make no mistake they are a decent side. This win tonight sets us up for another tough game against another good team.”
